“Can I Pickle Doc?” – Raquet Sports AFTER Hip and Knee Replacement #shorts
New research (The Journal of Arthroplasty) shares encouraging news for racket sports enthusiasts facing joint replacement surgery. The study surveyed over 1,200 patients who underwent total #jointreplacement and found that 71.9% of recent racket sports players successfully returned to their sport after surgery vs. only 30.2% of those who hadn’t played in years before surgery. Most remarkably, the majority returned to their same skill level within just 6 mos postoperatively, with higher physical function outcomes and no increased risk of complications. #jointreplacement
Modern #orthopedic guidelines now follow a 3-tiered activity framework that’s becoming increasingly permissive as implant technology advances. Low-impact activities like swimming, walking, and golf are generally recommended for all patients. Intermediate-impact sports including doubles tennis, hiking, and yes, pickleball, are recommended for patients with prior experience. Even some higher-impact activities may be considered on a case-by-case basis through shared decision-making between patient and surgeon. This represents a significant shift from historical recommendations that were often overly restrictive. Current evidence shows that 61% of total joint replacement patients return to their preferred activities within 1-3 yrs, often with improved function compared to their pre-surgery state. Sport-specific return rates are impressive: golf 80%, skiing 70%, tennis 100%, demonstrating that an active lifestyle doesn’t have to end with joint replacement. Key factors for successful return to sport include having recent pre-op experience with the activity, appropriate patient selection, proper rehabilitation, and realistic expectations. Patients should work closely with their orthopedic team to develop individualized activity plans that balance their lifestyle goals with implant longevity. #kneereplacementrecovery #pickleball

Hey Doc. What about ice hockey. Im a 50yo M that has had both hips replaced in the last 3 months. Looking to get back on the ice. It’s a men’s recreational league with no checking. Thoughts?
